Last weekend during their meeting in Zagreb, the LYMEC Bureau had the honour to visit the President of Croatia, Ivo Josipović. The President recieved the LYMEC delegation in his presidential palace in Zagreb. After meeting his chief political analyst, Dejan Jovic, they discussed several topics with him. After presenting the current political situation in Croatia, the President was very interested in the role and function of LYMEC as a European political youth organisation. President Josipović and the LYMEC delegation talked about Croatia’s ambitions to join the European Union and the role of the President in those ambitions. Futhermore they talked about the regional responsibility of Croatia in the Balkan-area and his recent efforts to improve the relations with Serbia.

From 6th to 11th July, around 25 young liberals from all over Europe met in Liverpool in the United Kingdom to discuss how local government can deliver for citizens while at the same time keeping budgets balanced. The nearly week-long seminar “Liberal Economy in Local Governance” was supported by the ALDE group in the Committee of the Regions and organized in co-operation with LYMEC member organization Liberal Youth from the UK.

Teremos como convidado António Eloy, vereador suplente dos Cidadãos por Lisboa, que nos virá dar a sua visão como observador privilegiado, mas a título pessoal, sobre a presente governação em Lisboa, com especial enfoque nos temas ambientais. António Eloy tem desenvolvido a sua actividade profissional como consultor na área do Ambiente e Energia. A nível político foi vereador suplente na CML de 1985 a 1989, deputado municipal em Barrancos de 2001 a 2005 e assistente no Parlamento Europeu do Partido Radical Italiano em 1985 (com Ema Bonnino e Marco Panela), actualmente é membro destacado dos Cidadãos por Lisboa. Envolveu-se também em diversas organizações ambientalistas, de direitos humanos e políticas e como editor, autor ou co-autor deu o seu contributo para 20 livros na área da Cultura, Ambiente e Sustentabilidade.

ELDR President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP speaks on the European way for Russia - a delusion or natural choice?

O MLS - Movimento Liberal Social reprova veementemente a utilização, por parte do Estado português, da sua "golden share" na PT para vetar a venda da participação desta na Vivo à Telefonica. Na opinião do MLS, essa utilização irá fazer diminuir a confiança dos investidores nacionais e internacionais na lisura accionista do mercado português, prejudicando a prazo esse mercado em geral e, em especial, a própria PT.

O MLS condena a existência de "golden shares" como extremamente negativa, sendo favorável à liberdade de transacção e de investimento a nível internacional, sem intervenções constrangedoras por parte dos Estados. A intervenção irresponsável e demagógica do Estado Português neste caso apenas vem fortalecer essa posição.

Mesmo admitindo que, como argumentou o primeiro-ministro José Sócrates, a "golden share" é para ser usada quando necessário, o MLS não consegue ver em que medida é que a decisão de vender a participação na Vivo poderia ser prejudicial a qualquer interesse tutelado pelo Estado português. A utilização da "golden share" aparece assim como um capricho do Estado para impor aos accionistas da PT uma determinada orientação que nem parece levar em linha de conta a difícil situação financeira da própria PT.

O MLS relembra que já existem vários casos relativos a "golden shares" no Tribunal de Justiça da União Europeia, incluindo um caso relativo à "golden share" da PT. Nesses casos, a Comissão Europeia considera as golden shares contrárias às regras relativas à livre circulação de capitais. Esta intervenção do Governo Português apenas veio tornar claro que a Comissão Europeia tem perfeita razão, e o MLS faz votos de que o Tribunal de Justiça venha brevemente a declarar as "golden shares" contrárias ao Direito da União Europeia.
